Pyrkon has been proving for years that the boundary between speculative fiction and reality is much thinner than it might seem. In the Science Zone, big questions don’t belong exclusively in sci-fi novels, TV series, games, and space sagas. Scientists ask them every single day. However, instead of lightsabers and magic, they have laboratories, workshops, telescopes, experiments, models, data, and very concrete knowledge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, the Science Zone program is particularly packed. There will be space in a truly historical sense, as Pyrkon will host people who have looked at Earth from the perspective of orbit. There will be discussions about the future, artificial intelligence, ecology, health, history, cryptography, speculative fiction, plants, meteorites, virtual reality, medicine, technology, and how to talk about science without being pompous, but with substance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On top of that, proven formats are returning, alongside new collaborations and spaces where you don’t just have to listen. You can ask, touch, see, test, or simply chat with people who know how to explain the world with passion. The Science Zone at Pyrkon doesn’t ask for silence in the library. It says: <\/strong>“Come closer, things are happening right here, right now!”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Space closer than ever<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If the Science Zone ever had a moment where it could truly say “we are aiming for the stars,” it is right now. Pyrkon will host Dr. S\u0142awosz Uzna\u0144ski-Wi\u015bniewski, a Polish astronaut from the European Space Agency, the second Pole in history to fly into space, and the first Pole aboard the International Space Station. His solo lecture will be an opportunity to hear about his journey\u2014from science, electronics, and working with massive research infrastructure, to the orbital mission that made history for the Polish space program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that’s not all. One of the strongest points of the program will also be a unique Q&A session featuring S\u0142awosz Uzna\u0144ski-Wi\u015bniewski<\/a><\/strong> and Eileen Collins<\/a><\/strong>\u2014a NASA legend, the first female pilot of a Space Shuttle, and later the first female Space Shuttle commander. ESA and NASA together on one stage. Two different paths, two great chapters of space exploration, and one conversation that simply cannot be replicated.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The space-focused part of the Science Zone doesn’t end with astronauts, though. The panel entitled “W kosmosie jest miejsce dla ka\u017cdego\u201d (\u201cThere is Room for Everyone in Space”) will show that the space sector isn’t just rockets and spacesuits. It’s also planetary geology, space medicine, robotics, satellite optics, business, communication, and a whole network of skills without which no mission could ever succeed. If you’ve ever wondered whether there’s a place in space for someone outside the “classic” engineering mould, this panel will give you a very clear answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To top it off, we’ll be joined by scientists from the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CBK PAN), to whom Pyrkon also owes a fragment of this year’s promotional video. Dr. Pawe\u0142 Lejba will talk about lasers that literally “aim” at space, measuring distances to satellites, the Moon, and space debris. Dr. Piotr Dunst, in turn, will take you into the world of atomic clocks and the timescale that not only ticks away the seconds but also helps GPS, telecommunications, the internet, and our entire technological everyday life function. Sounds like science fiction? Even better. In the Science Zone, science fiction often turns out to simply be science with very good equipment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Science that talks to pop culture<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pyrkon wouldn’t be Pyrkon if science kept its distance from pop culture. In the Science Zone, you’ll get a solid dose of topics that start with games, TV shows, horror movies, superheroes, or fantasy, and end with very real questions about the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A strong representation from the Stowarzyszenie Rzecznicy Nauki<\/em> (Science Advocates Association) is returning to the program. Or rather, they aren’t just returning\u2014they are storming the Science Zone with eleven lectures. They will cover everything: from alchemy and poisons, through miracle cures, extreme animals, meteorites, technology, conspiracy theories, biotechnology, and Warhammer 40,000, all the way to Korean folklore hidden in pop culture. The Science Advocates have the rare ability to talk about complex things clearly, without hiding behind an academic wall and without treating the audience as passive listeners.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In a similar spirit, Aga Szu\u015bcik will deliver a lecture titled “Defeat Vecna Down Below”<\/em>. It will be a session about intimate health, prevention, and myths, told through the lens of pop culture, humour, and very concrete education. Conversation instead of taboos, knowledge instead of fear-mongering, and an attempt to close the gate to the Upside Down of misinformation instead of internet chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. hab. Marek Zieli\u0144ski from Collegium Da Vinci will also talk about the future, asking what we can learn from science fiction. This isn’t just about visions of flying cars or AI speaking in a suspiciously calm voice. It’s about how speculative fiction helps us imagine society, education, work, and technologies that are no longer so far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you prefer science that jumps out right next to you with a prop in hand, keep an eye out for the Heweliusze Nauki. Their Science Busking<\/em> is a format without a stage and without distance. Educators go out to people, make a connection, conduct short experiments, and show that sometimes a simple object is enough to trigger very serious questions.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

History, nature, and the planet under the magnifying glass<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This year, the Science Zone also reminds us that the past, nature, and the future are much more interconnected than we like to think. As part of a collaboration with ZNAK Publishing House, authors and creators will present history in several completely different ways. From the Sudetes and local legends, through the story of King W\u0142adys\u0142aw Jagie\u0142\u0142o, to 17th-century cuisine and the Polish footprint in space exploration. History here won’t be a date to memorize, but a world full of people, decisions, beliefs, flavours, and weird details that stay in your head for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will also be plenty of folklore, archaeology, and anthropology, especially in the context of Scandinavia and Viking culture. We will learn about the processes and symbolism behind stone runes and ornaments appearing on the weapons and equipment of the warrior peoples of the North. We will also hear a lot about their poetry and the works of the skalds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The topic of our planet will also resonate strongly. Dr. hab. Tomasz Samojlik will talk about how science fiction tries to save the world from an ecological catastrophe. It’s hard to find a better example of the Pyrkon-style fusion of science and fantasy\u2014comics, literature, and pop culture \u00a0turn out to be a space where we can test ideas for the future before reality hands us the bill.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There will also be topics related to nature, geology, and physics. We’ll have volcanoes, the processes shaping the Earth, the story of the first moments of the Universe, and the question of just how extraordinary the planet we walk on every day really is, even though we rarely pay much attention to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A particularly beautiful, and this time literal, step out of the lecture hall will be a pollinator-botanical walk entitled “Come Into Bloom”<\/em>. Justyna Kierat, Gosia Ruszkowska, and Kaja Nowakowska will take participants outside the Pyrkon grounds to show them wild bees, plants, and the relationships between them right in the heart of the city. No trips to the end of the world. No grand expeditions. Just a park, a little mindfulness, and people who know how to explain why flowers and pollinators are having one of the most important dialogues in nature.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

One of the pillars of this year’s Science Zone will also be our collaboration with Fantastyczny UAM<\/em>  (Fantastic AMU\u2014Adam Mickiewicz University). It’s an initiative that fits perfectly with Pyrkon because it shows the academic world without a stiff upper lip and with a clear nod to speculative fiction. The program will include lectures, workshops, archaeology, literature, history, nature, VR, and everything that makes a university suddenly stop feeling like Room 214 and start feeling like an adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new feature you simply must not miss is the Science Workshop Corner, created in cooperation with the Workshop Zone. It is a space for getting your hands dirty rather than just listening. On level 0 in the PCC building, teams from Fantastic AMU and the Pozna\u0144 University of Life Sciences will prove that academic knowledge and a passion for fantasy can truly be two sides of the same coin. There will be craftsmanship, tradition, and magic understood in a very practical way\u2014meaning, instead of spells, we have techniques, materials, experience, and people who know what they’re doing. At the same time, there will be an atmosphere of discovery because workshops have a particular advantage over lectures: when something goes wrong, you can’t pretend “that was supposed to happen.” And that\u2019s exactly why they are so good.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Add to this the booths and activities in the Science Base (Naukowa Baza<\/em>). The Enigma Cipher Centre will showcase the world of cryptography and the Polish mathematicians who broke the German machine’s cipher. The Archaeological Museum in Biskupin will talk about prehistoric weaving and metallurgy. Ku\u017ania Wiedzy<\/em> (the Forge of Knowledge) from Pozna\u0144 University of Technology will let you enter the world of 3D scanning, thermoforming, and biomedical engineering. Wroclaw Medical University will invite you to a medical quiz and lectures about anatomy, while Fantastic AMU will showcase research on VR navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amazing things will be happening outside, too. The Impact Morasko Science Center will remind us that Pozna\u0144 has its own space history recorded in meteorite craters. The Copper Smelter will return with fire, metal, a mini-quarry, and some hands-on workshops. Plus, there will be herbalism, crafting, and archaeological activities proving that science really likes to get its hands dirty.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Science Zone is not just big names and packed halls. It’s also those places where you can catch a moment between program events and talk to someone who, just an hour earlier, was talking about seemingly impossible things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s exactly what the Science Station is for. It is a meeting space with guests and speakers, perfect for those who thought: “Damn, I had one more question” <\/em>once a lecture was over, or for those who didn’t get a chance to raise their hand because someone else asked three questions and the speaker had to wrap up his talk. Here you can walk up, chat, ask for details, ask them to expand on a topic, or simply check if the speaker also thinks that the best questions pop into your head five minutes after the session ends.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Attractions also await you outside the hall, specifically at the Science Point, which perfectly pads out the Science Zone between major events. That’s where you can get hands-on with the tangible stuff. A model, a cipher, an experiment, a plant, a simulator, a meteorite, a tool, or a conversation that starts with “what exactly is this?” and ends with you planning your own research, studies, or at least your next lecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that is probably the coolest thing about this zone. You don’t have to be an expert, you don’t need to know the formulas, you don’t need to have read three scientific papers cover to cover beforehand. Curiosity is all you need. The rest begins right there on the spot.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It’s hard to list everyone, and that’s exactly the point<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With a program like this, the hardest part is that any summary, by definition, cuts someone short, only briefly mentions someone else, or unfairly leaves someone out of the main spotlight. But the Science Zone has a “very good” kind of problem. There are simply too many guests, topics, and attractions to fairly talk about all of them in one text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, treat this post as a map of first impulses. Space, AI, health, nature, history, workshops, pop culture, Science Advocates, Fantastic AMU, ZNAK publishing house, Scientific Workshop Corner, Science Station, Science Base, walks, and experiments. All of this is just a fraction of a larger whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best strategy? Check the schedule, mark your must-sees, leave time for random discoveries, and don’t be afraid to walk into a room where the topic sounds weird. In the Science Zone, “weird” often means “you’re about to learn something you’ll never be able to unsee.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
