RPG Zone/RPGaming
17 April 2023
Somewhere between the rustling of character sheets and rattling of dice, stories are born that you won’t find in any book. Pyrkon’s RPG Zone is a place where anyone can become a hero – it doesn’t matter if they wield a sword, a spell, or just a handful of good ideas. Here you can become space explorers fighting alien creatures and vegetation. Or you can face hordes of monsters hiding in the shadows of ancient ruins, with swords and sorcery on your side.
Strefa Zero na Pyrkonie
Do you want to solve a criminal mystery in a steampunk city covered by fog and smoke, or take part in a royal court intrigue in an ancestral tower on a capital planet of a small interstellar country, far into the reaches of space inhabited by humans? From horror fans to lovers of magical ponies – in the RPG Zone anyone can find something to make their game sessions even more immersive and fun.
For the uninitiated – what are RPGs?
RPGs (or role-playing games), which have enjoyed unrelenting popularity for decades, allow participants to take on the characters they have created and use their narrative to play out their actions.
The role of the narrator is taken over by the Game Master, who describes the surrounding world to the rest of the participants and decides on the course of the adventure. The framework of the game is specified by the system – a set of information about the universe in which the events take place and a description of the mechanics that decide the result of the players’ actions. The success of these ventures is based on the competences and features of the characters they play.
Various systems emphasize different aspects of gameplay: for example – some of them can focus on combat and give players a wide range of skills related to effectively defeating opponents. Others, based on criminal adventures, focus on interactions with side characters played by the Game Master and mechanics that allow you to play as people from specific environments and with useful knowledge and competences acquired during your life.
By combining the skillful narrative, player involvement and rules introduced by the system, the participants of the game can fully immerse themselves in the presented world, in which they have complete freedom of choice. However, they must remember that at the same time, each of their decisions will have consequences for the course of history: the riddle may remain unsolved, the missing son may not be found, and rescuing the traveller who was attacked may result in a rebellion in the kingdom. Who knows what the Game Master has in store?
Brief glossary of terms:
Before we go on an adventure, it is worth embracing a few basic concepts that often appear in the world of RPGs. Thanks to this, you can easily catch what is going on at the table, get into the game’s atmosphere faster and easily find yourself in the world of RPGs.
A role-playing game in which you play a character of your choice and create a story together with others. You don’t win with points – it’s the story, the decisions and the fun that count.
Person conducting the session. He describes the world, plays independent characters and reacts to players’ decisions. Something of a narrator, director and rule arbiter in one.
The totality of knowledge, the background of the story, the history of the world, myths and relationships between characters that build the reality of the game world and its unique character.
A session participant who plays one character and decides what they do in the game world.
A peculiar alter ego of the person playing, their character in the game. It has a name, a story, skills and its own goals, it is the character through which you experience the adventure.
Characters controlled by the Game Master: innkeepers, kings, monsters and mysterious strangers
A set of game rules that help to decide what is happening in the story. They help the Game Master to judge events fairly, hint at which tests to perform in a given situation, what dice to use and how to define the possible outcome of a given action.
The moment when you roll the dice to check the success of the action: whether you hit the opponent, convince the guard or manage to balance on the edge of the cliff.
Special polyhedral dice used to check if something went well (e.g. d6 is a standard hexagonal cube, and d20 is a dodecahedron).
One meeting, during which players play a fragment of the story. It can take an hour… or a whole day.
A short, closed adventure played in one session. Perfect for your first RPG or when you just want to sit back, play and experience the complete story from start to finish.
A longer story played out over multiple sessions, often with the same characters. The characters develop, the world changes, and the decisions from previous meetings have consequences in subsequent ones
This is the “ID” of the character, with data such as: their ancestry, class, features and abilities, statistics, as well as equipment (i.e. everything that they carry and own: weapons, elixirs, everyday objects, etc.) and important information about the character.
The character’s main occupation. In fantasy worlds, this can be a mage, warrior, rogue or barbarian, and in a more modern universe – a hacker, for example. The class determines the scope of knowledge and skills that the player character has in a given system, it can also affect the background of the character and, to some extent, their history.
Determines the species, origin and innate characteristics of the creature, influencing its appearance, statistics, and sometimes even its behavior or relations with representatives of other species. The most popular are: human, elf, dwarf, halfling, but there are many other races in different systems.
A set of data representing a specific aspect of a fictional character. Most games divide their statistics into different categories (e.g. features, skills, etc.).
Determine the character’s proficiency in performing specific activities (e.g. fighting, stealing, persuasion) and define the effectiveness of actions, they may be dependent on statistics.
The basic parameters of a character, defining their physical and mental capabilities that affect their success in combat, exploration and interaction. The most popular are strength, dexterity, constitution/endurance, intelligence, wisdom/perception and charisma.

The dice have been cast, or what the RPG Zone offers at Pyrkon:
Just as the games of imagination have no bounds, the attractions of the RPG Zone will be diverse and rich. We want everyone to find something for themselves, whether they are an elf, a dwarf, an alien or just a stranger who wandered onto our doorstep.
A fantastic place… for an RPG session
The beating heart of our Zone remains, as always, the RPGaming, located in Hall 11. Here you will find a sea of tables, with Game Masters on Duty waiting for you. They are armed with imagination and creativity, ready to guide players through exciting adventures and open portals to other worlds. Some of the tables will also remain at the disposal of parties that already have a Game Master in their ranks. For those who love longer sessions or want to play at night, RPGaming will remain open 24 hours a day.
Every year, several dozen Game Masters on Duty make each of the players find something for themselves in this corner of Pyrkon. Dozens of games await lovers of classic dungeoneering adventures, each one unique and full of unexpected twists and turns.
What if you have your own scenario that you want to run? No problem! Every year, you can submit your sessions through a special page, and we assign you a table where you can tell your epic story. Other players can sign up for your game, so don’t worry about the dangers of going alone.
However, if you prefer to remain at ease and only want a table for your crew, without making the sign-ups available to the public, visit POMoGe (the Masters and Players Service Point) in Hall 11. There you will receive a game table, where you can fully devote yourself to creating unforgettable stories.
Our presence will not be limited only to RPGaming and auditoriums, located on the mezzanine in pavilion 7 – attractions related to RPGs, as well as Game Masters, can also be found in other zones of Pyrkon.
Roll for secret knowledge!
In the RPG Zone, you will have the opportunity to meet the guests we invited — creators, masters and enthusiasts of role-playing games, who will be happy to share their knowledge, experience and background in the RPG industry. This is a great opportunity to ask questions, listen to inspiring stories and uncover some of the mystery of how all those scintillating adventures, worlds and characters are created.
We’ve also prepared many other attractions: workshops, lectures and meetings, during which you will be able to gain practical knowledge about running games, building a narrative or realistic character portrayal — regardless of whether you are taking your first steps in the RPG world, or you have already completed many campaigns.
Where secrets are revealed – take part in RPG Workshops
The times when secret knowledge was passed from master to journeyman have ended centuries ago. In the great new millennium, you can learn anything by using a search engine. Nevertheless – nothing can replace a face-to-face meeting with an experienced mentor who will not only reveal the arcane knowledge of his art, but will also show you how to apply it in practice.
RPG Academy – meetings in the form of workshops – is a unique attraction, during which you will be able to meet not just one teacher, but use the knowledge of the whole collective. Our guests will lead a series of meetings for you, consisting of a theoretical part, which will take place in an auditorium, and practical classes in RPGaming.
For some, embodying a fictional character and creating an interesting world are as natural as breathing. For others – it’s a challenge that requires getting out of their comfort zone. However, it does not matter whether you have innate talent or you are just dealing with your stage fright. Neither does the number of scenarios and dead characters you’ve left behind.
Role-playing games are a real art, and nothing makes it easier to work on your skills than meeting an experienced teacher.
Discover the magical truth in an alternate reality game
During Pyrkon, the festival alleys will become part of a dark story in which shade is intertwined with magic, and old secrets cannot be forgotten. The ARG will once again draw the participants into a fascinating story, this time transporting them to the world of dark fantasy – full of signs, symbols and torn fragments of a tale that need to be combined to understand their true meaning.
Each clue found is another step into a narrative marked by a curse, fate and the consequences of choices past. This is an invitation for those who want to become part of the story, not just its observers, and who know that in a world full of darkness, the truth is rarely clear – and discovering it always has a price.
Look out for the announcements, because we will share more details closer to the date of the event!
“On the power of words and storytelling”, or: our lectures have a theme!
This year, the lectures in the RPG Zone are connected by a common theme: the power of words and storytelling. Since the dawn of time, it was stories that allowed people to tame the world — they warned about what lurks in the forest after dark, shared the knowledge hidden in myths and legends, taught how to survive and how to understand reality.
We believe that stories have the power to shape imagination, build community, and give meaning to what remains unsaid. Therefore, we will listen especially carefully to the voices of those who want to talk about the narrative, the word and its power during their lectures – because that’s what stays with us long after the story has been told to the end.
Come visit the RPG Zone!
The RPG zone at Pyrkon is a space open to anyone who wants to immerse themselves – at least for a moment – in the world of stories created together at the table. Whether you are just starting your adventure with role-playing games or you have dozens of games under your proverbial belt, here you will find not only a place for yourself, but also the people ready to share their passion and inspire you.
Sit down, roll the dice and let your imagination lead you further – the rest will happen on its own.
